DOD Cyber Crime Center Appoints New Executive Director

The Defense Department said last week that Lesley Bernys is the new executive director of the Cyber Crime Center (DC3). Bernys most recently served as CIO and director of Information Technology Services and Solutions at the Air Force Office of Special Investigations.

Bernys began his career with the Department of the Air Force in 2003 as an AFOSI special agent. Throughout his public service career, he has held leadership positions in OSI, the Senate and U.S. Cyber Command.

“I am excited to share my appointment to the Senior Executive Service and selection as the Executive Director of the DoD Cyber Crime Center,” Bernys wrote on LinkedIn. “Truly grateful for the opportunity to lead an exceptional team dedicated to advancing cybersecurity and protecting national security.”

In the DC3 executive director role, Bernys oversees a staff of more 500 civilian, military and contractor personnel, supporting mission requirements across DOD and providing operational support for the Defense Industrial Base Cybersecurity program.

DC3, designated as a Federal Cybersecurity Center by Presidential Directive 54, provides crucial services to the DOD, interagency partners and international allies. These services include digital and multimedia forensics, specialized cyber training, technical solutions development and cybersecurity analytics. DC3 supports a wide range of critical missions, including cybersecurity, critical infrastructure protection, law enforcement and counterintelligence, and document and media exploitation.

Bernys succeeds Jude Sunderbruch, who retired from the position in June. Bernys is a graduate of the Dwight D. Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy.
