AI Could Transform Cyber Defense, But Security Must Come First

Defense and intelligence organizations will need to strengthen their foundational cyber capabilities as they adopt AI, according to Stretch Meyer, federal field CTO at Axonius. Meyer said agencies must improve network visibility to identify not only systems that have been secured but also “unknown unknowns,” including assets with incomplete software or vulnerability data, and develop plans to address those gaps.

He also warned that organizations will need to control AI tokens and monitor how they are used to prevent compromised AI sessions from providing unauthorized access to sensitive network information. At the same time, Meyer said AI could help overworked security teams reduce alert fatigue by identifying thousands of redundant alerts and helping less-experienced defenders analyze threats more quickly, provided vendors can deliver secure on-premises AI capabilities for the intelligence community.
