Gina Tourassi, Associate Laboratory Director, Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate, ORNL

The administration’s Genesis Mission aims to build an integrated ecosystem connecting supercomputers, AI systems and emerging quantum technologies to tackle complex challenges in scientific research.

Building that interconnected system requires overcoming both cultural and technical barriers, Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Gina Tourassi told GovCIO Media & Research at the SCSP AI+Expo 2026 in Washington, D.C. Tourassi, who is leading development of the American Science Cloud, discussed how researchers across the Energy Department are embracing a “One DOE” mindset to advance scientific discovery through shared infrastructure and collaboration.

Tourassi also explained how AI is transforming the scientific process by enabling real-time experimentation, adaptive modeling and interoperable data sharing across research environments. She further discussed Oak Ridge’s partnerships with industry cloud providers to accelerate supercomputer development as part of the Genesis Mission.
