Generative AI is introducing new challenges for digital security, which makes biometric technologies evermore critical. Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate’s Arun Vemury, director of its Biometric and Identity Technology Center, explained how biometrics enable officials to combat areas such as AI-driven identity fraud.

The conversation explored how DHS verifies identities across complex environments — from border crossings to remote digital interactions. Vemury detailed the agency’s collaborative approach, using cooperative research agreements and competitive evaluations to test and deploy cutting-edge biometric tools quickly.

He also discussed how DHS balances strong security with seamless user experiences through multi-layered verification methods like advanced facial recognition, liveness detection and emerging video call authentication techniques.
