From Fed to Founder: Joe Scheidler on People, Policy, Innovation
Joe Scheidler, Co-Founder and CEO of Helios
Joe Scheidler, a former associate director and special advisor at the White House and a policy and strategy advisor at the State Department, discussed his journey from federal service to entrepreneurship. Drawing on his work in legislative affairs, international development and national cybersecurity strategy, Scheidler explained how policy expertise and strategic partnerships became critical tools in his career transition.
He said his time in government exposed inefficiencies and gaps in traditional policy research tools, which led him to co-found Helios, a startup designed to help public policy professionals navigate complex regulatory landscapes. He outlined lessons learned from collaborating with Congress, international partners and private-sector stakeholders, emphasizing how relationships and trust can accelerate impact. Scheidler also offered advice to former federal employees pursuing new opportunities in the private sector.
