Former DOL CISO on the Importance of Building Your Network

Paul Blahusch, former CISO, DOL; President and CEO, B&A Cybersecurity Consulting

Paul Blahusch, former CISO at the Labor Department, said federal employees should prepare early for unexpected career changes, even when they feel secure in their roles.

In this episode of Fed Snacks, Blahusch emphasized the importance of building and maintaining professional networks across government and private industry and staying active in professional organizations. Offering help to others often leads to reciprocal support, such as résumé reviews, interview coaching and job referrals, he said.

Blahusch also advised workers transitioning to the private sector to practice patience and perseverance, particularly if a new position is not immediately lined up. “Plan for the unexpected, build and nurture your network, and don’t limit yourself. There’s a wide swath of opportunities out there if you’re willing to stay patient, flexible and open to new paths,” he said.
