Why Federal Experience Matters After Leaving Government
Jose Arrieta, former CIO, HHS; Founder of imagineeer
Jose Arrieta, former CIO at the Department of Health and Human Services, said federal civil servants routinely take on complex, demanding work in high-stakes environments shaped by public policy and competing priorities.
He emphasized the importance of understanding the private-sector environment when transitioning out of government, while also recognizing the value of the experience they bring with them. With the right preparation and mindset, Arrieta said those skills translate well beyond public service.
“Federal civil servants should leave government with confidence, knowing the challenges they’ve handled and the resilience they’ve built will serve them well anywhere,” he said.
